UNA GETS HISTORICAL MARKER

While not new news, many may not be aware of Una's Historic Marker which reads:

"The Una community developed around the crossroads of Smith Springs Road and Old Murfreesboro Pike in the early 19th century. The local postmaster changed the community name from Rowesdale, or Rosedale, to Una in 1882, honoring a Peabody College student much loved by local residents. Home to schools, churches, a general store, and a service station, this bustling, tightly-knit rural community was supplanted by suburban development by the end of the 20th century."

After much work Una Historian, Jan Cain, worked with the Metro Historical Commission to come up with the wording for the marker. District 29 Councilwoman, Vivian Wilhoite used her discretionary funds to purchase the marker.

The marker was placed on the Southeast corner of the intersection of Smith Springs Road and Old Murfreesboro Pike, the current site of the Ellis Garage. Property owner Myra Ellis whose family can be traced back to the early 1800's in the Una area graciously gave permission for the marker to be placed there.

On June 22, 1882 the United States Postal Service officially gave Una it's new name. On June 24, 2008 Una unveiled it's new Historical Marker.
